After almost a year in our new (to us) home in the woods, we finally renovated our laundry room. This room is one of the busiest rooms in our home; serving as a mudroom, laundry room, pantry, food preservation, wool dying studio, winery, and greenhouse.

The large cabinets that we utilize as our pantry had been installed so close to the sink cabinets that it was very difficult to access any items in the lower left bank of cabinets. We began by moving these cabinets to the other wall, which had been plumbed for an extra refrigerator before, but we needed the space, not a second fridge upstairs.

The paint color in the room always made me feel rushed and anxious, reminding me of the influence of color has on emotions – red often utilized to increase energy in a space. The wall color was a darker terra cotta color, while not a terrible color, it was very unpleasant when paired with very white cabinets and trim.

Sink

We also replaced the old (broken) faucet with a beautiful chrome faucet from Home Depot, which lends to the “old, lived in” look I was going for, and pairs beautifully with the vintage cast iron sink.

Next, we moved the cabinets above the washer and dryer up to the ceiling. The cabinets were at a typical height for upper cabinets, but the lid to the washer would block the bottom of the cabinet door, making it difficult to access.

Paint

I know, white cabinets have been incredibly popular for over a decade, but I just can’t love white cabinets. White cabinets look very staged and are much more difficult to keep looking nice than other colors – a terrible option for a busy laundry room. I opted for a cream color on the walls to warm the space and to give it a “lived in” feeling. The color is Antique White by Valspar (HGTV) from Lowe’s. I love how it lightened the room and makes me want to work there

The cabinets were a standard builder grade white that had worn off in some spots. Did I mention, I’m not a fan of white cabinets? The laundry room came with this wonderful vintage cast iron sink, which blended into the background of the white cabinets. To highlight the sink and balance the cream walls, I chose a beautiful sage green. This color, Dried Thyme (Valspar HGTV), is a gorgeous shade that brings a fresh accent to the room and nicely compliments the cream wall color.

The finishing touch for the project was the cabinet hardware. Cabinet hardware is ridiculously expensive, but I found these antique bronze drawer pulls on Amazon and love them.

The laundry room has much more functionality now that we can access all the cabinets easily. It makes this a much more enjoyable working space. It was amazing how much difference these changes made for around $150.
