Hamburger Steak with Gravy

Hamburger steak is a wonderful comfort food that comes together quickly and goes perfect served over creamy mashed potatoes.
Jump to RecipeHamburger steaks, aka Salisbury steaks for some, are ground beef patties (almost like miniature meatloaf patties) made with a delicious savory gravy. Although they are traditionally made with ground beef, you could also use ground turkey, venison, or chicken.
This recipe is fantastic for busy weeknight dinners, not only because it comes together so quickly, but it’s cooked all in one pan meaning less dishes! I love my cast iron skillet to cook up these hamburger steaks, but any large skillet will work. Make sure the sides of your skillet are at least 3″ to leave room for the gravy.
I love mushrooms, my kids definitely don’t – it’s one of the few foods that neither one likes. As such, I listed them as optional in this recipe.
Ingredients
Ground beef
Breadcrumbs
Egg
Worcestershire
Dijon mustard
Onion powder
Garlic powder
Salt and pepper
Butter
Flour
Ketchup
Beef broth
Mushrooms (optional)
How to Make Hamburger Steaks
Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire, ketchup, mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl and form into 4-6 patties about ¾” thick (depending on how big you like your patties).

Melt butter in a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Brown patties for 3 minutes per side and remove to a plate while you make the gravy.
Reduce heat to medium low and melt butter. Whisk in flour and stir until combined and cook for 1 minute until it smells lightly toasted. Add in the ketchup, Worcestershire, and seasonings, whisking thoroughly.
Finally, add the steaks back into the gravy pan and cook for 10 additional minutes (until internal temperature of 165℉). If you are using mushrooms, add them in now to cook the remaining time.

Serve with mashed potatoes and enjoy!
