Equipment

  • 1 9x13 baking dish
  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 whisk
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • large knife

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf bread, cubed old, stale bread works best
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • 9 large eggs
  • 4 c milk (whole milk is best)
  • c sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 c raisins (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350℉.
  • Grease a 9x13 baking dish and slice bread into 1" cubes.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • Place half the bread in the baking dish, add half the raisins, then top with the remaining bread and raisins. Drizzle melted butter over the top.
  • Pour egg mixture over the top. Use a fork to press the bread down to soak up the mixture.
  • Bake for 45-55 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Allow to cool for 10 minutes. Enjoy!

Notes

This can be made beforehand and baked later.  Allowing more time for the bread to absorb the egg mixture creates a much more uniform pudding.
If making ahead of time, place in a cold oven and heat, otherwise you risk shocking and breaking the baking dish during cooking.
